A diesel-powered attack submarine was towed into port in San Diego on Friday after a minor electrical fire damaged its propulsion system, a Navy spokeswoman said.
The submarine, the Blueback, was forced to the surface at an undisclosed location off the California coast Thursday afternoon when the fire erupted, said Lt. Sonja Hedley, the spokeswoman. There were no injuries, and the extent of damage was being assessed, she said.
The fire was extinguished almost immediately, and the cause was undetermined, she said.
The Blueback carries a crew of 65 enlisted men and eight officers and was on a training operation when the fire broke out.
