Two people were killed on area freeways Sunday in what the California Highway Patrol said had been so far a largely uneventful and safe Memorial Day weekend in San Diego County.
Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, a car driven by Marin R. Shrader, 23, of Rancho Bernardo, drifted onto the shoulder of Interstate 15, near Carroll Canyon Road in the Scripps Ranch area, investigators said.
The car collided with a parked car on the shoulder, flipped over onto the fourth lane of the freeway, where Shrader was thrown from the car and hit by numerous vehicles, investigators said. The CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to call 268-2276.
A few minutes later, a pedestrian was struck by a car while running across northbound Interstate 5, near Imperial Avenue in Southeast San Diego. Investigators said a Latino woman, thought to be in her 30s, was hit by one car and then another after the first car pulled over to the shoulder.
The CHP said the driver of the first car notified authorities. Officials are labeling the second a hit-and-run.
