Cardinal John J. O’Connor of New York called off a visit to Muslim West Beirut but later appealed to the captors of nine American hostages to “let me see them.” The Roman Catholic archbishop, on the second day of a three-day peace mission to Lebanon, said, “I wish that those who are holding the hostages would let me see them because I would go anywhere that a priest can go.” Of his decision to scrap meetings with Muslim leaders in the capital’s western sector, he cited “security reasons.” Instead, O’Connor, traveling in a bulletproof car with an army escort, visited a facility for those wounded in the country’s civil war. He also met with Maj. Gen. Michel Aoun, Lebanese Christian leader.
