A 20-year-old Pacoima woman who was in custody on suspicion of selling cocaine gave birth to a 5-pound girl in the dispensary of the Van Nuys Jail on Friday night only moments after she notified jailers that she needed assistance, Los Angeles police said.
Sgt. Lee Riley said the mother, who was booked at the jail at 8 a.m. Friday, was eight months pregnant. A doctor in the dispensary assisted in the birth, which occurred at 9:30 p.m.
An ambulance transported the mother and child to Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys.
Riley said the child was the mother’s fourth.
