Larry Mize and Mark McCumber capitalized on two late bogeys by Paul Azinger to move into a tie for the lead Saturday in the $1-million Western Open golf tournament at Oak Brook, Ill.
Mize shot a five-under-par 67, while McCumber, who needed an ice treatment on the 10th hole for his ailing back, had a 71. Both were tied at 10-under-par 206 after playing 54 holes over the Butler National course.
Azinger, who led by a stroke after 16 holes of the third round, bogeyed the last two to finish with a 72 and was tied with Peter Jacobsen at 207.
Jacobsen, who lost this tournament by one stroke last year when he took a double bogey on the final hole, shot his third straight 69.
Tammie Green’s two-under-par 70 in wet weather gave her a three-stroke lead in the $600,000 Du Maurier tournament at Montreal, the third of the four major tournaments on the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. tour.
Green, 29, rebounded from a double bogey on the 16th hole with a birdie on No. 17 and was at 207, nine under par for three rounds on the Beaconsfield Golf Club course.
First- and second-round leader Betsy King, 1983 champion Hollis Stacy, Jane Geddes and Penny Hammel shared second place at 210.
Hammel tied Nina Foust for the day’s best round, a 68. Geddes shot a 70, Stacy a 69 and King a 74.
Ronan Rafferty of Northern Ireland shot a four-under par 66 for a 54-hole total of 202 and a two-stroke lead over Britain’s Nick Faldo after three rounds of the $472,000 French Open at Chantilly, France. Faldo shot a 64.
