El Cajon jail inmates, in the holding area where a race riot took place Tuesday, were restricted to their cells in a “lock-down status” Wednesday night, authorities said.
About 90 inmates were being confined in module 7A Wednesday, which was designed for 24 inmates, said Sgt. Bob Ramirez. On Tuesday, the holding area housed 112 prisoners when the fight broke out.
Sheriff’s detectives were still investigating the cause of the riot, though the fight apparently started when about 15 black inmates “went after” a group of Latino and white prisoners.
Fifteen prisoners suffered minor injuries, Ramirez said.
