The city of Lawndale will dedicate the wading pool at William Green Park in honor of the late Edward C. Roberts, one of the city’s founding fathers, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Councilman Harold E. Hofmann will conduct the ceremonies, including tributes by Herman Weinstein, a member of the Lawndale Property Owners’ Assn., and Nancy Marthens, a civic activist and former member of the city Recreation Commission. Roberts’ widow, Caryl, and daughter, Linda, will attend the event at the park, 4558 W. 168th St.
Roberts, who was born in Cornwall, England, in 1912, moved to Lawndale in 1933. He was a carpenter for the Lawndale School District for 25 years, retiring in 1977.
Roberts helped conduct a successful drive for the city’s incorporation in 1959. He was a member of the Lawndale City Council from 1970 to 1982 and twice served as mayor. He died last year.
