Rock Within Limits

Why is it that every time New Order performs, it seems we have the same reviews written (“Arrogancefest ’89 at Irvine Meadows,” by Chris Willman, Calendar, June 19)? All include descriptions such as “arrogance,” “stately indifference” and “struggling against” limitations.
Seeing the four groups--PiL, the Sugarcubes and De La Soul were also on the ticket--in San Diego was wonderful. The experience of letting New Order’s insightful and disturbing lyrics touch me was truly cathartic.
But then, who listens to lyrics these days? I think the audience needs to rise above its own limitations.
