Murray Way Off Base for His Defense of Rose
- Share via
Jim Murray says that Pete Rose “didn’t know anything the Sporting News didn’t know” when he bet on his team.
Oh, really? Would the Sporting News know if Eric Davis’ knee felt a lot better one morning? Would the Sporting News know if a rookie pitcher scheduled for a meaningless game in the last week of the season would be replaced at the last minute by the ace of the staff, thus skewing the odds?
Would the Sporting News know if Rose would be willing to burn his pitching staff out trying to come back in a laugher, while another manager might have an outfielder on the mound?
For Murray to refer to betting on baseball as “a misdemeanor” is unconscionable.
