South Gate Police Officer Dies After Long Cancer Bout

Services were held Friday at Rose Hills Memorial Chapel near Whittier for South Gate Police Officer Jim Welsh, who died after a long bout with cancer. He was 48.
Welsh, a resident of South Gate, died Tuesday at the City of Hope in Duarte of complications after surgery for cancer of the lymphatic system. Welsh was diagnosed with cancer in November, 1986, and began treatment. He returned to work for a time.
Welsh, a veteran of 24 years with the South Gate Police Department, was honored during Public Service Recognition Week with an award for his dedication and service to the department and city.
Welsh is survived by his wife, Beverly, and three children, Rhonda, 27, Jill, 25, and Jim Jr., 21; and three grandchildren.
