San Diego Boats Second, Third in Race for Life

Two San Diego Yacht Club entrants in the San Diego-to-Honolulu double-handed Transpac “Race for Life,” finished second and third to winners Eric Bohman and Kevin Miller of the Channel Islands Yacht Club Saturday in Honolulu. A record 11 yachts were entered.
Jeff Hardgrave and Ed Litzring, sailing Adriana, took more than 15 days to finish the 2,300-mile race, behind Bohman and Miller’s winning 13 days, 14 hours 29 minutes 19 seconds. Sailing Stinger, Terry Lingenfelder and Mike Casinelli took more than 17 days to finish third.
VOLLEYBALL
Four San Diego Junior Volleyball Club members earned All-American status at the U.S. Volleyball Assn. Junior Olympics in Toledo, Ohio.
Heather Collins of Poway High (first team), Kerri Downey of Helix (second team) and Michelle Rico of University (third team) played for the San Diego girls’ 16-under team that finished the tournament third out of 65 teams in pool play.
Amy Boyer of Poway (second team) played for the 18-under team that placed ninth out of 60 teams.
San Diego’s boys’ 16-under team won its consolation final, beating a team from Pennsylvania, to finish ninth among 32. The 18-under boys finished 11th in a field of 45.
