A Mira Mesa man shot Saturday night by San Diego police after he attacked an officer with a knife and meat cleaver died shortly after the incident, authorities said Sunday.
Lawrence Miller, 47, died at 8:45 p.m. at Mercy Hospital, after being shot twice in the abdomen by Officer Daniel Roman, officials said.
Police responded to a call at 6:15 p.m. on Saturday from an unidentified person who asked them to check on Miller, an electronics technician for TWA, who was threatening suicide, a police spokesman said.
When Roman and other officers approached Miller’s apartment, the man opened his door and threatened Roman with a knife, the spokesman said.
Miller then closed the door and reopened it, this time holding a meat cleaver in addition to the knife, officials said.
Police said as Miller approached Roman with the knives, the officer shot him twice in the stomach.
Authorities are investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved, a coroner’s deputy said.
