On-Time Performance by Airlines Fell: The on-time performance of the 13 major U.S. airlines fell in May to 79.5% of flights operated from 83.4% in April, the Transportation Department said. The department’s monthly Air Travel Consumer Report said America West Airlines led with an on-time record of 91.7% and Eastern Airlines was second at 87.2%. Pan American World Airways was at the bottom of the list, with 69.6% of its flights on time. A flight is considered on time if it operates within 15 minutes of schedule, not counting mechanical problems.
