USC football Coach Larry Smith named Mike Sanford an assistant coach in charge of wide receivers. Sanford, a 1978 graduate of USC, had been the quarterback and receivers coach at Purdue since 1987.
While at USC, Sanford, 34, was a reserve quarterback and safety for the Trojans, before becoming a graduate assistant to John Robinson in 1977. From ’77 to ‘87, he coached at Virginia Military Institute, Cal State Long Beach, Army and San Diego City College.
