Mary Slaney, former world record-holder in the women’s mile, will undergo surgery on her right Achilles’ tendon today in New York.
Slaney was scheduled to run the mile in the New York Track and Field Games on Saturday, but dropped out of the meet because of the injury.
Lynn Williams, a Canadian Olympian, has a stress fracture in her left foot and also will miss the race.
The injury-plagued Slaney, who has had operations on both Achilles’ tendons, three shin operations, many stress fractures in her ankles and legs, a torn back muscle and a fractured skull, will undergo the fourth operation on her right Achilles.
