‘Granny Flats’ Limited in La Canada Flintridge

The La Canada Flintridge City Council on Monday passed an ordinance restricting construction of second-unit homes to lots of 15,000 square feet or larger.
Members approved in 4-0 votes both the ordinance designed to “preserve the city’s low-density, residential character” and an amendment stipulating that city approval of second-unit projects should protect “public views and aesthetic values of the neighborhood.”
Second-unit homes, or “granny flats,” are housing built in addition to a lot’s main unit.
State law specifies that such housing can exist as long as it is used to house senior citizens.
