MONTEREY, Calif. — U.S. Transportation Secretary Samuel K. Skinner praised California’s proposed 9-cent-per-gallon gasoline tax increase proposal today, saying states must solve their own transportation problems rather than depend on Washington.
“The states that are raising user fees or are finding creative ways to finance their infrastructure problems are going to be the leaders of economic activity in the future,” Skinner said.
“I hope it passes. That will be a tough referendum,” he said of California’s $18.5-billion, 10-year transportation package.
