COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — The national government lifted press censorship Monday, a day after Sri Lanka’s chief censor was shot to death by suspected left-wing rebels.
Deputy Defense Minister Ranjan Wijeratne announced the move at a meeting with editors of Sri Lankan newspapers, a government official said.
Wijeratne asked them not to glorify terrorism and advised them to exercise self-censorship in the interests of the country, a journalist present at the meeting said.
Censorship was imposed July 5 amid escalating ethnic violence in the island nation.
