MODESTO — The field is set for the Sept. 12 special election to pick a replacement for former Rep. Tony Coelho (D-Calif.)
Coelho, a five-term congressman, resigned from California’s 15th District seat June 15 in the midst of an ethics investigation.
By Monday’s filing deadline, one Democrat, six Republicans and one Libertarian had filed nomination papers for the special election.
Assemblyman Gary A. Condit of Ceres is the lone Democratic candidate.
On the Republican side are Clare Berryhill of Ceres, a former state legislator and state food and agriculture director; retired Air Force Maj. Chris Patterakis of Modesto; Atwater farmer Robert Weimer; Merced housing contractor Cliff Burris; Livermore packing engineer Dave Williams, and Modesto businessman Jack McCoy.
The Libertarian candidate is Merced teacher Roy Shimp.
The 15th District includes all of Stanislaus, Merced and Mariposa counties and part of Fresno County.
If no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote in the Sept. 12 election, a runoff will be held Nov. 7.
