Import Protest : Threat to Patients
As president of the San Diego County Medical Society, I have been asked by many of our 3,000 members to convey the society’s concern over the recent harassment that some patients have endured when attempting to visit their physicians in the midst of protests by anti-abortion forces. As physicians whose primary concern is always the medical needs of our patients, we are very concerned.
The medical society, as an organized body, does not take a pro-life or pro-choice position. Abortion is an issue about which each of our members must make his or her own decision based on personal and professional beliefs. The society does, however, take the position that any effort to verbally or physically harass patients who are attempting to seek treatment for any medical reason is an objectionable and dangerous form of protest, and we absolutely oppose it.
