Two more films this weekend became members in good standing of this summer’s $100-million club. Warners’ “Lethal Weapon 2” ($102.2 million) and Disney’s “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” ($102.5 million) topped the century mark with weekend grosses of $8 million and $4 million, respectively. They join Warners’ “Batman” ($214.3 million), Paramount’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” ($180.5 million) and Columbia’s “Ghostbusters II” ($104.5 million). Universal’s “Parenthood” led the box office, bringing in $10.5 million on 1,262 screens, for a strong per-screen average of $8,325. Film audiences bailed Sylvester Stallone out of Tri-Star’s prison drama “Lock Up” with a respectable weekend take of $6 million.
* Opening to sold-out audiences in only four theaters--three in Los Angeles and one in New York--Cannes Film Festival winner “sex, lies and videotape” grossed $155,982 for a per-screen average of $38,996. The darkly funny, psychological drama by debut writer-director Steven Soderbergh surpassed the house record for a weekend performance at Cinema Studio in New York by more than $20,000, taking in $61,368. Because of its large take in Los Angeles, Miramax announced Monday that the film will move ahead of schedule and expand Friday to 20 additional theaters in the Los Angeles area.
