DENVER — Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Berke Breathed, whose final “Bloom County” comic strips appeared in newspapers last weekend, will be a contributing editor at Boating magazine, the magazine announced today.
John Owens, editor-in-chief of Boating, said Breathed, an avid boater who has homes in Evergreen, Colo., and Florida, will write a monthly humor column titled “Overboard.”
Breathed, who owns four boats, said his column will reflect his consuming interest in the sport.
“Comic strips satisfy the left side of my brain,” Breathed said. “But the right side keeps whispering ‘Feed me horsepower and sea water.”’
Breathed discontinued “Bloom County,” which featured Opus the penguin, to begin work on a new strip called “Outland” that will begin appearing Sept. 3.
