A 19-year-old Southeast San Diego resident was shot to death early Monday by two men who had pursued another man into the resident’s apartment.

Anthony Lamont Mathis of the 200 block of Ozark Street died about 5 a.m. at Mercy Hospital, authorities said.

The two men asked Mathis’ friend for drugs, and a fight ensued after the friend said he had none, San Diego Police Lt. Bill Taylor said.

After one of the men began pistol-whipping Mathis’ friend, the friend ran into Mathis’ apartment, where he had been visiting earlier, Taylor said. As the men beat the other man about the head and face with the pistol, Mathis came into the room and was shot.

Mathis’ friend was treated for his injuries at Mercy Hospital.
