BONN — East and West Germany agreed today to exchange art and historical documents scattered all over the former German Reich during World War II.
More than 2,000 priceless manuscripts and prints, some dating back to medieval days, will be returned from East Germany to libraries in Hamburg, Bremen and other West German cities in the next few weeks, the Ministry for Inter-German Affairs said.
Manuscripts by theologian Martin Luther, philosopher Immanuel Kant and other giants in German history will at the same time be shipped from the West to their places of origin in East Germany, the ministry said.
