WELLINGTON, New Zealand — A twin-engine sightseeing plane carrying four Americans and five Canadians crashed into a South Island mountain today, apparently killing all aboard, police said.
A New Zealander was piloting the Britten Norman Islander, which came down near Mt. Aspiring, rescue coordinator Bob Randal said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known. Police did not release the names and hometowns of the 10 people on board.
Wreckage from the Aspiring Air plane was scattered about a mountainside 4,000 feet up, and was spotted by a helicopter pilot shortly after the plane was reported missing.
Two helicopters with medical personnel went to the crash site and reported from the air that there appeared to be no survivors.
