ORLANDO, Fla. — Fallen TV evangelist Jim Bakker and his wife Tammy Faye are sending out through the mail and over the airwaves a call for cash to pay lawyers they hope can keep Jim Bakker out of jail.
“Jim and I have no personal funds at all,” says a letter Tammy Faye Bakker mailed from Orlando, their base since May. “We do not know what to do except share with you the terrible urgency of this situation and ask if you will please help us. We need a million dollars-plus for the defense fund.”
The Bakkers’ plea also rings out in segments of the “Jim and Tammy Show” taped at studios in a defunct Orlando mall.
Jim Bakker’s trial is scheduled to start Aug. 28 in Charlotte, N.C., for 24 alleged crimes of fraud and conspiracy.
