3 San Diego Boys Win Tennis Openers

Three San Diego boys won opening-round matches in the national 12-and-under tennis championships Monday at Morley Field.
Advancing to today’s round of 64 are Scott Lippitt and Justin Phillips of Rancho Santa Fe and John Chanfreau of El Cajon; Andrew Evans of Rancho Santa Fe was eliminated.
Lippitt defeated Joseph Gilbert of Metairie, La., 6-0, 6-1; Chanfreau defeated Vinod Kannarkat of Potomac, Md., 4-6, 6-3, 6-4; and Phillips defeated Chad Campora of Lodi, Calif., 6-2, 6-2. Brandon Kramer of Reno defeated Evans, 6-3, 6-3.
Top-seeded Ryan Wolters of San Jose and second-seeded Blake McMeans of Knoxville, Tenn., won in straight sets. Today’s singles matches begin at 8 a.m.
SAILING
Don Jesberg of San Francisco won the third race of the six-day International Etchells World Championship regatta off Point Loma. Dave Curtis of Marblehead, Mass., and San Diego’s Bruce Nelson are tied for first in the series standings. Curtis finished second and Nelson finished ninth in the third race. Jesberg is third in the standings.
Larry Klein of San Diego is fourth overall after finishing fifth in the third race. San Diego’s Norm Reynolds is in ninth place. The fourth day of racing begins today at noon.
