TUNIS, Tunisia — Fatah, the main PLO group, elected an expanded leadership Wednesday, bringing in the widow of assassinated military commander Abu Jihad and dropping the hard-line ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Rafik Natsheh.
The general congress gave a seat on the 18-member central committee to Intissar Wazir, 47, the first woman to reach such rank in either Fatah or the Palestine Liberation Organization.
Nine of the members of the outgoing leadership, including all those who founded Fatah with Chairman Yasser Arafat 30 years ago, retained their seats in the secret ballot by 1,100 delegates.
