Del Mar to Honor Bill Shoemaker on Sept. 10

Bill Shoemaker, thoroughbred horse racing’s all-time winningest jockey with more than 8,800 victories, will be given a special day at the Del Mar on Sept. 10 as part of his farewell tour.
Shoemaker, who will turn 58 on Aug. 19, announced last year he is retiring in February at Santa Anita, and he is touring race tracks around the world.
General Manager Joseph Harper said Shoemaker will be honored with a ceremony. The $100,000 Budweiser Breeders’ Cup stakes will be the featured race.
BASKETBALL
Dave Kirksey, Christian Heritage College’s all-time men’s basketball leader in rebounding (471) and shooting percentage (64.9), will return next season as a graduate assistant, according to Swen Nater, the school’s athletic director.
DIVING
Kristen Walls, a Monte Vista graduate who will attend UCLA, finished seventh in the girls’ 16-18 platform diving competition at the Junior Olympic national championships at The Woodlands, Tex. Walls leaves today for Raleigh-Durham, N.C., where she will compete on the one-meter board at the senior national outdoor competition.
