Computer Sales to Communists Approved: The Commerce Department said it was allowing more powerful computers to be exported to communist nations than those on a list of approved exports it issued only a month ago. The original list had prompted criticism from the Defense Department that the exports might jeopardize U.S. security. A Defense Department official said the department was aware of Commerce’s new list but had no comment beyond that made by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney in July. The new list includes more powerful and more durable laptop computers than were included in the original list.
