A former tribal secretary and administrator of the Barona band of Mission Indians was arraigned Tuesday in federal court on a felony charge of embezzling about $10,000 in tribal funds over two years.
Susan Osuna, 43, of Santa Ysabel, was charged in U. S. District Court in San Diego as a result of a Department of Interior investigation into allegations that Osuna embezzled funds from tribal checking accounts during 1987 and 1988, said U. S. Atty. William Braniff.
Osuna was tribal secretary of the Barona Indian band from July, 1985, to July, 1988. The Barona reservation is about 7 miles northeast of Lakeside.
U.S. Magistrate Barry Ted Moskowitz released Osuna on her own recognizance and ordered her to appear for further proceedings in District Court on Aug. 28.
