L-1011 Lands Safely on 2 Engines at LAX

The pilot of a Delta Air Lines L-1011 shut down one the craft’s engines Tuesday and safely landed the jumbo jet at Los Angeles International Airport, officials said.

The landing was a scheduled stop for Flight 79 from Atlanta to Honolulu, and the problem was believed to be minor, said Delta spokeswoman Glenda Hatchett Johnson in Atlanta.

“We don’t know yet exactly why the engine was shut down,” she said. “But it was done as a precaution.”

The jet was about 100 miles east of Los Angeles when the pilot advised the control tower that he was shutting down the engine under the right wing and preparing to land on two engines, said Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Fred O’Donnell.
