WORLD : Solidarity Wants Walesa to Lead

WARSAW — Solidarity lawmakers drew up a resolution today calling for a non-Communist coalition government with Lech Walesa as prime minister.
The draft resolution was debated by Solidarity lawmakers, who had gathered at a caucus with the United Peasant Party and the Democratic Party--the two minor parties that agreed to form a coalition with Solidarity.
The three parties represent 264 parliament votes, a majority in the 460-member Sejm, and theoretically enough to form a non-Communist government. However, it is not certain whether the Communist Party--known officially as the Polish United Workers Party--will turn over control of the government.
The Communist Party chief described his party’s situation as “dangerous.” “We have entered a period of an open fight for power,” party First Secretary Mieczyslaw F. Rakowski told a closed meeting of Communist lawmakers earlier in the day.
