Tunisian Opposition Leader Jailed for Year

TUNIS, Tunisia — A court here has jailed an opposition politician for one year in what his lawyers described as the first political trial since President Zine Abidine ben Ali took power in 1987.
Jalloul Azzouna, leader of an unrecognized splinter faction of the small Popular Unity Party, was found guilty Thursday of disparaging the head of state and distributing a press statement without registering it with the authorities.
