Officer Shot in Leg by Own Gun in Crash

A rookie Los Angeles police officer suffered a minor injury early Sunday when his service revolver discharged after he apparently fell asleep and drove off the southbound Santa Ana Freeway near Irvine, police said.
The bullet grazed a leg of the officer, Bryan Haney, 28, and he was treated and released at Saddleback Community Hospital in Laguna Hills, Detective Charles Humphrey said.
Haney, who has been on the police force about eight months, had gotten off work at Rampart Division about 3 a.m. Sunday, Humphrey said.
The accident occurred at 5:20 a.m. on the freeway near Sand Canyon Road in Orange County Haney said.
