ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — The bodies of Texas congressman Mickey Leland and eight other Americans killed Aug. 7 in a plane crash will arrive in the United States on Wednesday, U.S. and Ethiopian officials said Monday.
Leland and 15 others died when the Twin Otter plane taking them to an Ethiopian refugee camp flew into a mountain in bad weather. It took searchers a week to find the wreckage.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Richard Boucher said the remains of the victims are being flown from the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa to Frankfurt, West Germany, then on to Andrews Air Force Base just outside Washington.
Leland, a Democrat, had represented a Houston district since 1978 and was chairman of the House Select Committee on Hunger.
