West Hollywood : New Gay Rights Group Head

Joe Toy, a Long Beach gay rights activist, has been elected president of Christopher Street West, principal sponsor of the annual Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Pride Festival.
Toy succeeds Gary Jonker, who was president for two years. Toy has served on the nonprofit group’s board of directors for 11 years, spokesman David M. Smith said.
Although best known for the festival, which it co-sponsored last year with the city of West Hollywood, Christopher Street West each year awards more than $100,000 in grants to gay and lesbian support groups, Smith said.
