KFAC-FM announced Thursday that it will change to a contemporary format on Sept. 20 at 2 p.m., ending months of speculation about the fate of the area’s only commercial classical music station. KFAC will encourage classical listeners to turn to public radio station KUSC (91.5) in its wake. KFAC announcer Rich Capparela will move over to KUSC, said KUSC general manager Wally Smith. About eight billboards promoting KFAC’s new incarnation have gone up around the city and more will go up later this week, a station official said. The yellow, red and black billboards read only: “It’s Alive. And coming Sept. 20, 1989.”
