Victories by the women’s team lifted the United States to a 66-53 lead over the Soviet Union on the first night of the Alamo Cup dual swim meet at Atlanta.
Janet Evans won the 800-meter freestyle in 8 minutes 24.73 seconds; Jenny Thompson and Nicole Haislett tied for first in the 100 freestyle in 56.56, and Summer Sanders won the 200 butterfly in 2:11.69. The meet continues through Saturday.
