Three Surfers Advance in Two Events Each at Oceanside

Dale Dobson of Oceanside, David Nuuhiwa of Torrance and Israel Paskowitz of San Clemente were among those who advanced to the semifinal rounds in two divisions each in the fifth Oceanside Longboard Surfing Club contest Saturday at the Oceanside Pier.
Dobson and Nuuhiwa advanced in the noserider division and also made the semifinals in the the masters division (40 and up) along with San Diegans Skip Frye, Tommy Lewis, Mike Vos and three others. Dobson is defending masters champion.
Paskowitz advanced in the noserider and the young men’s (19-29) divisions. Highly regarded noserider Chris Schlickenmeyer of Hawaii failed to advance.
Advancing in the women’s open division was former world champion Joyce Hoffman of San Juan Capistrano.
Semifinal rounds begin this morning at 7. The finals, including a 30-minute tandem heat, are scheduled to begin at 10:20 a.m.
SWIMMING
Lars Jorgensen, the 1988 San Diego Section swimmer of the year from Mt. Carmel High, won the 1,500-meter freestyle in the U.S.-Soviet Union dual meet in Atlanta.
His time of 15 minutes 21.71 seconds bettered that of Soviet swimmer Alexsader Gaidukevich, who finished in 15:23:00.
SOFTBALL
The Joker (70-year-old Danny Millsap) and His Four Aces will play the San Diego Grays, a senior team managed by Buzzie Bavasi, as part of a doubleheader fund-raising event at San Diego State’s Smith Field tonight at 5. Proceeds will go to SDSU baseball. The La Mesa 65s will play a team of former Aztec stars in the second game.
SOCCER
The Ft. Lauderdale Strikers defeated Boston, 1-0, in the deciding “mini-game” to win the American Soccer League playoffs and earn the right to play the San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer League in a national championship game Sept. 9 in San Jose.
The Nomads advanced to the game by defeating San Francisco Bay, 1-0, in the WSL championship game Aug. 12.
Ft. Lauderdale lost the second game of the two-game series, 2-0, Saturday but won the mini-game tiebreaker.
