Velma Cato, who has 16 years of local and network news experience, will become managing editor of Channel 2 News on Sept. 11. She was Southeast bureau chief for NBC News from May, 1987, to September, 1988, during which she coordinated the network’s coverage of the 1988 Democratic Convention in Atlanta. Before that, she was the network’s New York bureau chief for two years. Cato succeeds Michael Singer, who moved up to news director when Erik Sorenson, who formerly held that job, became the vice president and station manager.
