SALES AND USE TAX REVENUE

The latest payment of sales and use tax revenue to the cities of Orange County left municipal coffers $18.7 million richer. Santa Ana and Anaheim received the two largest amounts, but the per capita allocation was higher in several other cities, most notably in Costa Mesa, the highest. Villa Park received both the smallest total amount and the smallest per capita.

Each month cities and counties and other governmental organizations receive from the state advance payments in anticipation of sales tax revenue. In the fourth month they receive an adjusted amount--the difference between actual revenue and amounts previously received--plus the first advance payment for the next quarter. The amounts listed here are for the second advance payment for the second quarter of 1989.

FIVE-COUNTY COMPARISON Orange County’s total of $19.8 million received in the latest state disbursement of sales and use tax revenue ranked it second among Southern California’s five major counties. Although only about one-third the size of the amount received by Los Angeles County, the local per capita amount was by far the highest. Nineteen percent of all the money allocated in the five counties ended up in Orange County; 10% of all the money in the state.
