Treatment of Calves

This is a response to a Dining Notebook column by Colman Andrews and the resulting Aug. 13 letters condemning the treatment of formula-fed calves.

I find it hard to believe that The Times would publish such views without including even one letter defending the veal grower.

Did The Times invest the time and money to actually see calf-raising barns? The growers have nothing to hide. To the contrary, should the Veal Assn. find any barns mistreating calves, they would be dealt with severely.

It is untrue, as one letter writer says, that that the calves are given feed laced with antibiotics. It is also a lie that these calves are so confined that they cannot lie down or groom themselves; but Andrews saw fit to report these assertions of animal activists without substantiation.
