Alcott & Andrews Files for Protection: Alcott & Andrews, a New York-based women’s clothier, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection from creditors. The retail chain filed in New York, listing debts of $37 million and assets of $7.6 million. The bankruptcy filing comes less than a week after Alcott & Andrews announced plans to close eight of its 13 stores, including its only Southern California store at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. The chain apparently has abandoned plans announced last week to get financial assistance from some big-name backers.
