Laguna Beach : October Is Designated AIDS Awareness Month

Acknowledging a need for education and a public policy concerning AIDS, the City Council has voted to designate October as AIDS Awareness Month.

The resolution, passed by the council earlier this week, makes Laguna Beach the first Orange County city to join the national effort to dispel the myths and inappropriate fears associated with acquired immune deficiency syndrome, said Penny Weismuller, AIDS coordinator for the county Health Care Agency.

Karen Jones, chairperson of the 24-member AIDS Education Task Force in Laguna Beach, said plans for the education program include an educational forum to be aired on Dimension cable Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. and a discussion Oct. 19 by spiritual leaders regarding the role of the religious community in responding to AIDS, she said.
