CHARLESTON, S.C. — Relief workers today began handing out bottled water, clothing, plywood, roofing nails and disposable diapers to the tens of thousands left homeless in hurricane-ravaged South Carolina.
The goods were loaded on tractor-trailers from a warehouse and taken to distribution centers today. Officials expected to empty 20 to 30 trucks a day across the city.
About 300,000 residences or buildings remained without power throughout South Carolina. An estimated 50,000 of Charleston’s 65,000 residents are still out of their homes, Mayor Joseph P. Riley said.
