Former Notre Dame president Rev. Theodore M. Hesburgh and other members of a newly formed blue ribbon panel on reform of college athletics said they hope to submit a list of suggestions to the National Collegiate Athletic Assn. by mid-1991.
Hesburgh will chair the panel, funded by the nonprofit Knight Foundation. William C. Friday, former president of the University of North Carolina, will be vice chairman.
“We’re going to boil down to a few simple points that (college) presidents, coaches, athletic directors and players accept. . . . I think there will be about six principles that must be accepted and audited continually,” Hesburgh said at a news conference announcing the panel’s formation.
