TAIPEI — Evergreen Airways Corp. of Taiwan said it signed contracts with Boeing Commercial Airplanes and McDonnell Douglas Corp. today for the purchase of 26 aircraft valued at a total of $3.6 billion.
According to the agreements, Boeing will manufacture eight B747-400 and four B767-300ER passenger jets for Evergreen between 1992 and 1997 while McDonnell Douglas will deliver 14 MD-11 craft.
Evergreen, which was founded in March, plans its first flight for 1992. The airline’s initial destinations are expected to be in Asia while flights to the United States and Europe will be added later.
When it begins flights, Evergreen will be Taiwan’s second international airline operator after China Air Lines.
Evergreen is owned by Evergreen Group, said to be the world’s largest container-ship operator, possessing 66 fully modernized container vessels that travel to over 30 ports worldwide.
