NATION : Early Chill Invades East Coast
Frosty Canadian air swooped down the East Coast today, tying or shattering temperature records from New Hampshire to South Carolina and reinforcing calls for more facilities to shelter the homeless from deadly cold this winter.
Thermometers on New Hampshire’s Mt. Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast, plunged to 12 degrees early today while the mercury dipped below 30 degrees in Hartford, Conn., for the first time since late April.
Temperatures in at least eight cities in seven states--New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Jersey, Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina--fell to new all-time Oct. 10 lows or tied previous records.
