WORLD IN BRIEF : MEXICO : Former Police Chief Gets 11-Year Term

A former Mexico City police chief was sentenced to 11 years and 11 months in prison on charges of carrying out an extensive extortion campaign against his enemies, including a dozen police officers. After a prosecution that came to symbolize the corruption cleanup campaign by former President Miguel de la Madrid, Arturo Durazo was also fined about $17,000 to repair damage he did to the public treasury, and he must repay his victims, the official news agency Notimex said. Last month, Durazo was also sentenced to six years on charges of illegal arms possession.
